Aba. Over na ha. Puro kabig na lang yan no!

I believe that GIVING, not GETTING, brings to full bloom the Christmas Spirit.

total running time: 42:06 mins (38.55 mb @ 128 kbps)

TRACK LISTING:

1. The Christmas Song - Mel Torme
2. Happy Holidays - Bing Crosby
3. Winter Wonderland - Johnny Mercer
4. Joy To The World - The Cathedral Brass
5. Jingle Bells - Duke Ellington
6. It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - Andy Williams
7. The First Noel - Bing Crosby
8. Gloria In Excelsis Deo - Halle-Lujah
9. Adeste Fideles - X-Mas Noise
10. Oh Tannenbaum - Frosty MC
11. We Wish You A Merry Christmas - Three Kings
12. Little Drummer Boy - C.R.U.
13. Auld Lang Syne - Pathfinder

Christmas Songs po yan party people. I tried my best looking for songs that won’t sound cheap and cheesy, and this is the best line-up I could find. If you notice, the first 7 tracks are classics. Given a regrooved sound by famous remixers of course. The mix starts with a “Big Band - Swingy” feel, and later given a modern “Big Beat - Triphop” treatment. Around the 23 minute mark, you will notice the “Trancy” beats start kicking in.

I hope you enjoy this one!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Seriously, Tintin is a very dear friend.

HINDE SYA PWEDEEEEEE!. Pero hmmmmmm.. Pag may kapalit baka sakali pwede hehe.

Sobrang retro na ‘to eh. Matanda nako oo.

Tintin, here’s a little something for you. From your friendly neighborhood DJ..

You’re an idiot.

—————-

Hagibis is an all-male sing-and-dance group from the Philippines. A parody of the Village People, the group sings campy songs mostly about female beauty and falling in love with a beautiful woman. They were famous in the 1970s to the early 1980s and was also a Manila sound icon.

When you watch Hagibis in live concerts back in the 1970s, they imitate camp movements and singing styles. They appear muscular and fresh from the military yet they’re just simple musicians from Manila. Imitating the Village People’s campy movements and musical style gave smiles to Filipino audiences. They also use macho dance steps to express the sense of their masculine songs.

Part of Manila sound, the group is not a disco fever band but an all-male group with Taglish songs and camp imitation.

Below are their hits:

KATAWAN (BODY) - being attracted to the sexy form of a woman.

LEGS - being attracted to the long, smooth legs of a woman.

Legs, legs, legs mo ay nakakatunaw (Your legs makes me melt) Legs, legs, legs mo ay nakakasilaw (Your legs appears so bright)

LALAKE (MAN) - a song which explains why a man is attracted to a beautiful lady.

Unfortunately, the imitating styles of the Manila sound, including the Hagibis style of parodying the Village People, made Manila sound only a sub-genre to American music. At that point, Original Pilipino Music rose to fame. Even though, Hagibis songs became dance classics especially, “Katawan” and “Legs”. These songs are still popular until now. Hagibis is an inspiration of all-male groups.

Ok ok. I was and still am a big fan of this group. Besides, I don’t see any reason not to like them. Their songs are funny, yet speak of women and masculinity. Forget about this other group that imitated them a few years back. Maskulados ba yun? Putragis. Not like Hagibis, they were loved by everyone for the simple reason that people can relate to their songs, and dance to them na walang bahid ng kalaswaan at kamanyakan at bagkus, naglalagay sa pedestal sa kababaihan habang nagpapakita ng pagiging macho. One word to describe Hagibis and their music - ASTIG!

Kung ako ang tatanungin kung sino sa history ng Pinoy Music ang maituturing kong 5 greatests bands/groups of all time, this will be my list: APO, The Dawn, Eraserheads, Juan Dela Cruz Band, and Hagibis (not in particular order). These bands - ASTIG!

Although the band broke up eventually, mayroon din ilan members ang nagkapangalan at sumikat na hindi nakadikit ang tatak ng Hagibis. Isa na dito si Sonny Parsons. Kilala nyo sya? End of story. Astig yun ah!’.. Tama. ASTIG TALAGA!

My tribute to one of the best the Philippines has produced!

This megamix is a novelty and wasn’t created using turntables, cd players, and professional mixing softwares. I finished this one in 2 hours using simple cut and paste techniques and minor reverse tweaks here and there. You might notice that this mix isn’t as seamless as the ones I did before. Mahirap kase. Hindi constant ang BPM. Mahirap i-beatmatch just like other OPM music. You may find the mix different from the ones I did before but one thing I can assure you… TRIP ITO! YOU WILL LOVE IT!

I started collecting records way back 1984.

It was only after a year that I was able convince my mom to give me money to buy a cheap-ass record player. It was an Electown. The one with a plastic body, belt driven, made in Taiwan, and no pitch control. I bought the turntable at Deeco at Farmer’s Plaza for P1,200 only hahaha! Doon nagsimula ang lahat.

With that cheap turntable, I started learning how to mix on my own. Paano makakapag-mix? Eh iisa lang ang turntable? Wala din akong mixer. Well, that didn’t stop me from learning. I practiced day and night using 1 turntable, 1 cassette deck, and a home made 2 channel rotary mixer. I even recorded my mixes. And the result?… CRAP! Puro kabayo! (kabayo is a term we DJs use to describe beatmatching 2 songs na sablay.. ang tunog - tigidig-tigidig)

No one gave me the basics. I learned everything on my own. In spite of the challenges and the frustrations, I didn’t give up. After 3 years of practicing and being a bedroom DJ, I was invited by a cousin to spin at a debut party. That was my first exposure and my first time to get my hands on the real deal – A pair of Technics SL-1200’s (the industry standard till now) and a 19″ rack mounted Numark Mixer with sampler. After that day, I never looked back. That was the turning point.

1989 was the year my cousins and I decided to start our own mobile group. Social Distortion, Forscink, Altered Noise, Sound Fusion, Sonorous, Psycho Deco, Audio Compulsion, RSL, Exile, First Harmonic among others. These were the best mobiles of that time, at ang mga naging inspirasyon namin sa aming munting grupo. With the help of our friends, and the support of our parents, SENSORY ASSAULT MOBILE was born.

We never really got famous although we guested twice on 89 DMZ’s Mobile Circuit. An SA (Sensory Assault) member even competed at DMC mixing competition in 1990 but sadly, elimination pa lang eh eliminated na wahahahaha! Masyado matindi ang competition noon, and we were the first to admit that going head to head with the mobile groups mentioned above would always result in disaster.

I can still vividly recall the memories of my mobile days. We bonded like brothers. Mula setup at pack-up, lagi kaming nakangiti.

All of us grew up and matured , had our own little ‘rakets’, and eventually shifted our interests to other things, but everytime we meet up, and have our ‘inuman’ sessions, lagi pa rin naming pinaguusapan ang nakaraan.

The mobile era is dead. When the ‘DJ’ got his standing elevated from being just a ‘spinner’ at parties, to a status fitting a celebrity, the art of partying changed as well. The late 90s saw the birth and recognition of local DJ celebrities like Manolet Dario, Mon Maramba, Toti Dalmacion, Cocoy Puyat, Rubber Inc, DJ Papi, Kevin Ruiz, Erwin Edralin, Edge, DJ Patch, David Jacob, Niki Jurado, Elmer Dado, Robin Mendoza (syempre kasama ko jan kunwari haha!) When people took notice of these great talents, and realized that parties can solely rely on the gift and talent of one (the DJ), mobiles took the backseat. Marketing and events groups started riding on the popularity of the DJ, while hiring the best sound providers that don’t mind NOT being on the spotlight.

The mobile era will not come back. The clubbing scene in the Philippines is rapidly evolving and with the progression that’s inevitable, the ‘mobile’ driven cool party atmosphere is yesterday’s news.

Here’s my tribute to all the mobiles that ruled during the 80s and 90s. A homage to my own group SENSORY ASSAULT. Thank you SA. If not for you, and the hundreds of parties that you rocked till the morning, ‘DJ ROBIN MENDOZA’ will never be.
